Welcome to to the Mackay Mountain Marathon a Mountain Bike and Trail Running Festival!

Whether you are looking for a fun family adventure, an extreme MTB challenge or a big day out on the running trails, this event set in Eungella National Park, is sure to satisfy. Pedal or run your way through lush rainforest on a winding single track crossing platypus inhabited creeks and rivers. Then head out and tackle the fire trails in the back country before making (if you are brave enough) your way back to finish above the clouds and on top of the world.

Eungella National Park is situated 80km west of Mackay, sitting high above the surrounding plains. It is one of Queensland's most diverse parks, a visit to Eungella is both an exciting adventure and an escape to tranquility. Why not make a weekend of it? We have planned family events and entertainment on the Saturday afternoon and evening. We encourage all participants to stay the night and either camp out with us at the Eungella Cricket Oval or stay with one of the local accommodation providers. (See our accommodation page for more details.) 

 

 

The event caters for all ages and skill levels. The event will start and finish at Eungella. There is a choice of 3 mountain bike adventures and 3 trail running adventures - maybe consider doing one of each!

Mountain Bike

  • 15km Recreational Course - designed for those wanting to participate in a mountain bike event for the first ride and also for younger riders. (14 or older - all riders under 14 wishing to participate must have an approval letter from either their MTB club or MTBA coach.)

  • 38km Sport Course - designed to challenge those who are familiar with the sport. (open to riders 15 or older, all riders under 15 wishing to participate must have an approval letter from either their MTB club or MTBA coach.)

  • 80km Marathon Course - competitive course with prize money up for grabs as well as the prestigious 'Platypus Trophy'. (18+)

Trail Run

  • 5km Family Fun Run/Walk - designed to encourage everyone to get back to nature and experience the tropical rainforest without having to venture too far.

  • 15km Recreational Course - for anyone keen to experience the joy of trail running. This course is a good entry level train run or a great hit out for anyone keen to push themselves for a fast time.

  • 38km Platypus Trophy Marathon Course - designed to challenge the more experienced runners who are familiar with trail running and want to tackle a more technical course.

The courses consist of a combination of fire trails, bitumen roads, winding single tracks, creek crossings and amazing views fo the Pioneer Valley. The conditions along courses will vary from lush rainforest to arid bushland so you should be prepared for the conditions.

Kids Session

The kids session is basically as skills session run by a local mountain bike team and is held on the cricket group where we set up the camp ground.  It caters for all ages and mostly includes games, like "bike limbo", "Last one standing" and lots of others.  The activities are all held on the cricket ground so you won't need to relocate to watch. So don't forget to pack the kids bikes and helmets so they can participate in this free session.

Register before 30th June 2019 and receive a FREE event jersey (mountain bike) or t-shirt (trail run) with your registration. To determine what size jersey or shirt you need, refer to the size chart. Please note that 5km Fun Run/Walk does not included a free run shirt.

ENTRANT BAGS

Event bags containing rider and runner number plates will be available for collection from Corry Cyles on the Thursday (from 1pm) and Friday before the event. For out of town entrants, bags can be collected from our rego desk at the ECDA Hall, North Street Eungella on Saturday 1pm. People from out of town not arriving until Sunday can collect their bags from the EDCA Hall between 6.30 - 7am.

COURSE INFORMATION

5km Family fun run / bush walk from Eungella to Sky window and back along spectacular single-track rainforest. Enjoy getting back to nature and some stunning views of the Pioneer Valley. Open to everyone aged 5 or more.

15km Recreation Course (non-competitive, random prize draws) has been designed for younger competitors (14+) and those participating in a mountain bike or trail running event for the first time.

 

38km Sport Course (Single Class) is recommended for MTB riders (16+) who are up for a challenge but not keen to slog it out all day in the 80km event. A moderate skill level will be required to complete this course. A serious challenge for experienced trail runners and endurance athletes. Be prepared to be self-sufficient on this run.

80km Platypus Trophy Marathon Course (Competitive Classes) will incorporate all aspects of cross country mountain biking, a moderate to high level of fitness will be required to complete this course. (18+)

The 15km and 38km Trail Runs are part of The Queensland Trail Running Championships. The Queensland Trail Running Championships are a group of independent races that showcase the rugged beauty and challenge Queensland trail running has to offer. The Championships are convened by the Trail Running Association of Queensland but owned by all runners, racers and event directors across the State. See here for more information.

 

 

EVENT INFO

Specific rules that apply to Mackay Mountain Marathon:

1. Riders bikes must be in good mechanical order. Bicycles will be inspected prior to the event start and all bikes deemed unfit will not be allowed to take part in the event. It is the responsibility of the rider to ensure their bicycle is in good working order. 

2. All riders must carry eyewear protection/sunglasses with them at all times while participating in the Mackay Mountain Marathon. It is strongly recommended that riders wear eye protection whilst riding through any rainforest are due to the risk posed by "Wait-a-while" vine. It is recommended by the event organisers that you select a "transition" style eyewear due to the varying light conditions riders will experience riding in and out of the dense rainforest. 

3. All riders and runners must wear closed in shoes.

4. All riders must wear a helmet at all times while participating in the Mackay Mountain Marathon.

5. Due to the risks involved, children under 5 are not permitted to take part in the 5km run/walk in any way.

6. The tracks are not pram friendly therefore prams and strollers are not permitted on the course.

Risk Acknowledgment

The Participant acknowledges and understands that cycling trail running activities are dangerous recreational activities and that by participating in them they are exposed to certain risks including injury, death and damage to their property, including as a result of the negligence or breach of contract of The Organisers.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, The Participant releases and indemnifies The Organiser, event sponsors, event funding bodies, beneficiaries and their respective committee members, directors, employees, contractors, volunteers and representatives, the owners, licensees and occupiers of land and property upon which The Event or any part of it is conducted including statutory bodies and local authorities against all and any actions or claims which may be made by The Participant or on their behalf or by other parties for or in respect of or arising out of any injury, loss, damage or death caused to The Participant or their property whether by negligence, breach of contract or in any way whatsoever.

Please note we do not offer refunds for cancelled registration. We can offer to transfer your registration to another person or offer you a credit to be used the following year..
